Name
Joy, the settled kind: having enough, with little sorrow.
Meaning
The joy in the English poem is a settled one: little sorrow, plenty around you and a safe place to live. The word grows from a root of wanting and winning, and its Norse kin vin, still heard in Björgvin, the old name of Bergen, means a meadow. Joy is the good place reached and held. In Beowulf the rune's Old English name, wynn, is joined to ēþel, the Old English name of ōþila, the inherited land: eþelwyn, the joy of home. In the story, the men who abandoned their lord to the dragon are told that they and all their kin will lose it.
The poems
English Rune Poem. Joy he has
who knows little of woe,
of pain and sorrow,
and has himself
prosperity and bliss,
and a safe home enough.
